The Art of Dressing
Due to receiving little love on this article, I will try till this goes viral until at least 5 people read this.
A couple of months ago, before a family dinner, I
was asked,“Why are you wearing a bow tie? You look overdressed.”
That is the moment I was enlightened.
“You can never be overdressed or over educated,” I
said, “If wearing a bow tie today makes me happy, I will. And if today feels
like a day to wear a bow tie, I will”. And so, I did.
I grew up not caring about what I wore and
mismatched combinations all the time. You would always see me in a pair of
shorts and a tee shirt. However, as the teenage middle school hormones kicked
in, I began to pay attention to how I look. I started picking out my clothes
everyday and applying kohl to make my eyes stand out. Of course, as I began, I
did it just as a way to look good in the eyes of the world but eventually, I
learnt; it’s not about them, it’s about me.
Thus I learnt the Art of Dressing. And it is as
simple as one step: wear what you love, not what others would love.
The Art of Dressing does not come in naturally for
anyone. It is something learnt and something admired. However, it is picked up
only by a few. By those whose eye it catches.
Every wardrobe, whether expensive or not, carries a
story. It has limited clothes, jewellery, shoes and unlimited thoughts attached
to it. Every piece of cloth has a story, an ideation, a thought process and a lot
of hard work to give it life.
Listen carefully; the clothes speak to you. It might
sound silly at first but yes, they speak a combination, a way of wearing, an
attitude to carry and a style to own. However, they speak to only those, who
listen. They stand out only on those who listen. Watch carefully, how they fall
and how they beam. Admire it. Think about what made you buy it. And you will
suddenly understand what was missing in your daily attire.
Love is an emotion, not as expensive as your ensemble.
It is easy to fall in love with people and easier so, with your own creations.
So don’t stop yourself and fall in love with your outfit every single morning.
Fall in love with how you wear it regardless of what people say. Forget the
rules, forget the trends. Once you are passionate about what you wear and how
you look- everything else will fall into place. Try new things out; explore
yourself. Dressing is nothing but a form of self expression. So it’s okay if
you want to look overdressed because that is how you feel that day. That is the
happiness you are radiating. And it’s okay to look like you’ve just woken up
from bed because that’s who you are today. Is that not the best part all
together? Becoming a new person with a new dawn?
Wear your clothes with all these emotions. And all
these weave your Art to Dress.
This art like all others will come with practice and
will get better. You will understand the colours, tones, pitch, style and the
feel of every piece of clothing. And as all artists learn to stroke towards the
end of their masterpiece, you will learn, that your masterpiece has no end. It is
forever.
You will find many articles on the Internet instructing
you how to dress and what to dress like for given occasions titled as ‘The Art
of Dressing’. I’m not saying that these articles are wrong- they are extremely
helpful and necessary for a beginner or absolutely anyone who is facing a
fashion crisis, but titled as ‘The Art of Dressing’ or similar, might be
misleading, in my opinion. Because dressing is more than a trend, a rule and an
occasion; dressing by itself is you.
Get excited about what you will have to wear. Think
about it. Visualize combinations and how it would look. Think about a blue
dress with a pair of black heels. Then think about the same, with silver heels.
Finally, think about it with a pair of sneakers. You have now grown. Think
beyond what the runways and bloggers teach you. They are there for a reason,
but at the same time, so are you.
So the next time you open your wardrobe, look at it
differently. Life is all about perspective; how you look at things. And so is
the fashion you sculpt into your style.
You are definitely a Kate Spade gal :) Dress yourself as you please and help the rest of us who are still learning on how to mix and match our wardrobe !!
